Speech Pathologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, speech therapist – which is it?! You may have heard us referred to as many things. In Australia, we are referred to as Speech Pathologists. So, what is a Speech Pathologist, and what do we do?
Speech pathologists diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice. What many people don’t know is that Speech Pathologists also help people who have difficulty swallowing food and drink safely. Some also help babies or young children who have difficulty feeding or chewing.
Clients include babies, children and adults with difficulties which may be due to known or unknown causes, or with acquired difficulties due to things like stroke, traumatic head injury, and degenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease) or dementia.
Speech Pathologists can work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, community health centres, private clinics, people’s homes, schools/preschools, aged care homes, or specialist centres such as the Stuttering Unit in Sydney.
To practise as a Speech Pathologist in Australia, you must have completed an accredited university degree (typically a Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree if you have previously completed a University degree). You may then apply to become a Certified Practising Member of Speech Pathology Australia. To maintain eligibility, members must participate in Speech Pathology Australia’s Professional Self Regulation program. This ensures that practising members stay up to date and continue to develop their professional skills, in order to provide quality service to their clients.
Central Coast Speech Pathology Services offers appointments to children and young teenagers, with most clients aged 3-12. Services are available in the areas of speech, language (comprehension, expression, and social use of language), literacy (reading and writing) and stuttering. We have a fun and inviting clinic conveniently located in the quiet suburb of Bensville, but also offer school/preschool or home visits to approved locations. You are welcome to contact us at any time via our website, Facebook page or by phone or email.
